[Salon] UN condemns torture in landslide vote, but Israel opposes resolution

FM: John Whitbeck

Transmitted below is a link to a report on the UN General Assembly's vote on a resolution reaffirming the absolute prohibition of torture under international law and renewing calls for all states to prevent torture, aid victims and hold perpetrators accountable.

The vote was 169 to 3 with 4 abstentions, with the negative votes being cast by the United States, Israel and Argentina.

One cannot accuse the American and Israeli governments of hypocrisy, insincerity or inconsistency in voting as they did on this resolution.

As the sanctioned prosecutors and judges of the International Criminal Court are well aware and as has been made clear repeatedly and in numerous ways, the American and Israeli governments believe that international law does not apply to them and that neither they nor any of their citizens should be held accountable for any of the war crimes, crimes against humanity and other atrocities that they choose to commit.
